RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
